ChatFile is a Chrome extension that helps you use local project files, web pages, selected text, and AI answers as context in web AI workflows. ChatFile is designed to keep project data local-first and to send content only when a user-requested workflow requires it.
This policy covers the ChatFile extension and the ChatFile website. If a third-party AI website, API provider, account provider, payment provider, or hosting provider processes data, that service's own privacy terms also apply.
ChatFile may store the following data in browser-local extension storage, including IndexedDB and Chrome extension storage:
Local indexes and caches are stored for the browser profile where the extension is installed. Removing a project inside ChatFile deletes that project's local authorization, file list, and index from ChatFile, but it does not delete files from your disk.
ChatFile reads local files only after you choose a folder and grant browser permission. File contents may be processed locally to build indexes, prepare prompt context, preview files, create drafts, or create write proposals. ChatFile does not upload your whole project to ChatFile servers.
When you insert file context into a web AI page or use a configured API or remote embedding provider, the selected snippets or text needed for that workflow may be sent to that third-party service.
ChatFile can read limited data from supported web AI pages and user-selected browser tabs, such as page URL, title, selected text, input draft, visible page content, or captured AI answers. This is used to insert context, capture answers, convert pages to Markdown or CSV, and run browser-context workflows.
ChatFile does not read every page you visit. Some workflows require user action or site permission before page content is captured.
If you create or use a ChatFile account, account email, Supabase user ID, authentication state, and Pro entitlement state may be stored in Supabase and cached locally in the extension. Payment checkout and payment details are handled by the payment provider. ChatFile may receive entitlement or order status needed to activate paid features, but it does not store full payment card details.
You may configure API providers or use supported web AI sessions such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, GLM, or Doubao. When you use those services through ChatFile, selected prompts, file snippets, web page text, or workflow drafts may be sent to the provider you chose. The provider processes that content under its own terms and privacy policy.
API keys are stored in Chrome local extension storage and are used to call the provider you configure. ChatFile does not sell API keys or use them for advertising.
The ChatFile website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare may process standard request logs needed to deliver and protect the site. We do not add third-party advertising trackers or analytics scripts to this static website by default.
ChatFile does not sell user data. ChatFile does not use your local files, captured content, API keys, or AI conversations for third-party advertising. We do not manually review your local files unless you choose to send information to support.
Uninstalling the extension removes ChatFile's local extension storage and IndexedDB data from that browser profile, including local indexes, folder handles, workflow drafts, scheduled task metadata, cached provider settings, and write proposals. Browser behavior may vary by profile or sync settings. Uninstalling ChatFile does not delete original files from your disk.
To request deletion of account data associated with ChatFile, email [email protected] from the account email when possible.
